She made many friends, and even among her in-laws there were those who were sympathetic to her plight. And then every time he would reappear in my life, I would have to work through those emotions and, you know, forgive him all over again.

I had watched the film version of this when it first came out and found the account so harrowing that when I re-watched Not Without My Daughter: The Harrowing True Story of a Mother's Courage I found myself wanting to read the accounts of Betty Mahmoody and her daughter Mathob Mahmoody.Evading Moody's sinister spy network, she secretly met sympathisers opposed to Khomeini's savage regime.

It shows what happened to Betty and her daughter after they escaped to America, while also explaining the heartbreaking phenomenon of international child abduction. Moody's attitude toward Betty also changed: He forced her to abide by increasingly strict Iranian customs; he lied to her; he claimed that she was lying whenever she complained; he ignored her and their daughter for days at a time; he even blinded himself to the oppression of women in Iran. During their escape several people put themselves in harms way, possibly even in a position where they could be killed for helping Ms. At the time, my dad was living and working in Mexico as a surgeon, which meant that every other weekend found my brother and I listlessly cooped up in my dad’s clinic in Zaragoza, a very poor community on the outskirts of Juarez.I think this was my first introduction to the middle east and what it was like to be a woman in their culture. Upset but still wanting to read about a foreign experience, I picked up the book Not Without My Daughter, and didn’t put it down until I’d read the last page of the epilogue. The people who helped here were the only kind people in the story, never focusing on family members who were understanding or not out-right evil. The most memorable things are usually going to be horrible so this book was filled with the most horrible memories of a year. I have known and worked with several Iranians who are nothing at all like the characters portrayed in this book.

A shockingly successful novel with a bit of exaggeration and full of revenge against the ex-husband and his family. What I have said in another review about Mahtob's book is that she focuses very little on the actual stay and journey out of Tehran after being held captive by her father and it read more like a documented therapeutic account that I'm sure she remains traumatized to this day, even though her father died years ago. Once there, they would take a boat and travel across the Persian Gulf to one of the Gulf Arab States. While watching Mahtob play in the park, Betty encountered Judy, another American woman married to an Iranian. It was compelling and I could hardly put it down, except when it got to be too painful at times and I needed an emotional break. Betty tried to get help from Moody's family, but they approved of Moody's actions and refused to help. It was a scary time to be a six-year-old, so my mom taught us how to memorize landmarks and phone numbers, even directions on how to get back to the international bridge, and what to tell authorities if my dad ever got a fit of the crazies.

Although Alfred Molina plays the role of Betty’s abusive Iranian husband well in the film, reading this book really made me realize just how far gone her husband was in real life. She also details, in the follow up, what it was like to come back to America and try to put her life back together. How she finally escapes, and the sympathetic friends she meets along the way will make your heart soar.At any rate, I loved that Betty took the time to explain Muslim holidays and customs, foods and their preparations, rules of etiquette, and even bureaucratic governmental policies.
