The stories of ancient gods and heroes seem to have a staying power that has outlasted belief in them. The _ga cookie, installed by Google Analytics, calculates visitor, session and campaign data and also keeps track of site usage for the site's analytics report. Loki also shares his experience of love in its many forms including shape-shifting into a mare to distract a stallion resulting in the birth of Odin's famous eight-legged horse, his marriages to Sigyn and Angrboda, his monstrous children by the latter, and his intense, doomed relationship with Baldr the Beautiful. Born within the heart of a fire in the hollow of a tree-trunk, Loki arrives in Asgard as an outsider.

Yet it is clear that despite his inclination towards rebelliousness he still seeks a place among the old guard and willingly negotiating the turbulent politics of Asgard. neither of these things are inexcusable in and of themselves however piled on top of one another while adding nothing new or unique to the narrative i found them disappointing, and reading the book a rather tedious process which was quite the opposite of what i had hoped for. Some were given a fun twist, others that aren't so thoroughly told originally were explained further (Norse mythology can be a bit "weird" which leaves a lot of room for interpretation) and overall it was nice to revisit a lot of the stories I've heard throughout my childhood/school years.

Gedurende het boek praat Loki rechtstreeks tegen de lezer en vertelt hij over zijn streken tijdens de mythen.

Melvin Burgess' s first novel, The Cry of the Wolf , was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal, which he then won for his cult novel Smack , along with the Guardian's Children's Fiction Prize. It’s marvelously woven, the little intrigue string all through out it making it something else than a redemption arc of a villain. Here Loki presents his unique perspective on life, the universe and especially his fellow Norse gods and goddesses. What follows is an entertaining, unexpectely moving novel in which Loki, a self-admitted liar, lays bare the failings of the other gods and outlines his pivotal role in. Burgess frames his gleeful adult debut as Loki, Norse god of mischief, attempting to set his story straight.

Readers are given a fresh look at Norse mythology through Loki’s eyes, starting with the stories chronicling the world’s creation. And indeed, as it eventually turns out, he does, though we're assured that is something that will benefit us, in the end. The setup here is that we - as modern humans - are being told this story by Loki from his deep prison.
