It was the first time we’d had an audience that large, teeming with an expectation that we were fulfilling in front of their eyes. I imagine her for weeks after, smoking, her eyes dull, making pots of coffee, crying into the phone with her hope wilting. On the whole, I didn’t overly enjoy this book I thought it would share more about Jake and the Scissor Sisters.

I think a lot of us were odd and awkward in childhood and even if we didn't struggle with identity or sexuality we were nonetheless uncomfortable in our own skins. With a voice that is by turns engaging and amiable, introspective and moving, passionate and unfailingly honest—even when he doesn’t come off well for it—he lays bare his journey from a precocious boy who always knew he was different, to a teenager coming to terms with his sexuality, and on into adulthood where he embraced his self-expression through writing, performing, go-go dancing, and, eventually, through music. Please note: By their very nature, all signed books will have been handled several times before they get to you. I’m a massive fan of music bios, and saw the Scissor Sisters early on supporting Duran Duran, and fell in love with their music. The house was as Spielbergian middle-class as they came: yellow-patterned linoleum in the kitchen and foamy-looking olive-green shag carpeting in the bedrooms. Both of my parents came from modest means, so there was very little extravagance other than Dad’s love for transportation and machinery.

Shears plucks up the names of people who were significant to his evolution and rise, and shares them with his readers, and, of course, as Scissor Sisters evolved from a concept to a major influencer on the indie rock scene, the list of celebrities he encountered along the way becomes all the more impressive.

He shares the good, the bad, the ugly with us, and did something so many of us fail to do—he didn’t quit.

I was frequently on the floor of my room, flat on my stomach, surrounded by countless He-Man figures and castles. They lined my bedroom shelves and did not bother to applaud my one-man shows, which I performed against the wooden footboard of my bed. Now Shears has turned his attention to looking back at his life and career so far with the release of his autobiography Boys Keep Swinging. His love for her is so real that he even wrote a song for her--"Mary," which became one of the band's hit singles.
