Below I’ll recommend a particular piece of gear for every possible freshwater aquarium setup, according to my experience and observations. Anyhow, both the Fluval 107 and the Eheim 2215 can maintain a similar flow rate of about 95 GPH. The guys from Fluval are rather transparent about the data, but Eheim doesn’t really disclose the number.

Best Canister Filters for Each Gallon Tank Capacity (2023)

Canister filters are hands-down the most silently-operating water filters for aquariums out there. Their architecture and the particular way of turning water via tubing allow them to remain absolutely soundless, while still performing the best in terms of water turnover. The combined GPH of these two is a little over 900, which circulates the whole water volume of my aquarium more than 7 times per hour. By following these guidelines you will make sure that your aquarium water remains crystal clear at all times. If you’re lower on the budget you can replace the Cascade 1500 with, the way cheaper, SunSun/Polar Aurora which is half the price but still provides almost as strong filtration. With proper maintenance, I’ve had mine live for about 2.5 years, which is quite alright for a filter of this price. It is very durable and it will probably last for 5 or more years, based on my experience with the 06 Series. I am not really sure how they managed to pull that one-off, as it’s water movement we’re talking about here. Clean the pipes and tubing – sometimes debris may partially clog the tubing, which leads to a louder hum in stronger aquarium filters. Use hot water to rinse the insides. Don’t forget to run some dechlorinated water through them after the cleaning. Recommended for [insert number] gallon aquariums” – Honestly, I have no idea how the manufacturers come up with these since they vary greatly across different brands. To me, this hints that too many variables are not considered, making these recommendations unreliable. I strongly recommend not following these.

Another thing that I should mention here is the instructions for setting an Eheim filter up and priming it. As harsh as it might sound, the instructions are complete garbage. Worry not though. Hi, I am an intermediate aqua-scaper. After 3 55g set ups I am moving up to a 125g. I love your article about quietest filters. However I am considering an OASE BioMaster Thermo 600. Simply because the heater is integrated. That said… can you possibly tell me about the “quietness” of this particular filter??

Precise copper wound bobbin, impeller magnet, impeller fan blade, hardened alumina ceramic axle, rubber shaft mount and co-molded, high-flex polymer impeller cover result in up to 25% quieter operation. There are a few things to consider when choosing between the Fluval 207 and 307 canister filters. The main difference between the two models is that the 307 has double the media capacity of the 207, meaning it can handle twice as much waste before needing to be cleaned. However, both filters come with identical filtration media, so they will provide similar levels of filtration. Canister filters are the best type of aquarium filter because they hold the most media and are the most powerful. The only instance you should use a sponge or a HOB filter is in very small tanks with small fish. In these cases, the smaller fish could get pushed around by the stronger water current a canister would produce. But any tank that holds 10 or more gallons of water will benefit greatly from a canister filter. How to choose the best one for your fish tank? One interesting thing is, The Polar Aurora / SunSun canister filters come with a built-in UV sterilizer.

I can’t help but agree that for a tighter budget, the SunSun / Polar Aurora canister filters are absolutely killing the competition. Note that for a 20-gallon aquarium that’s long, I recommend getting a spray bar for the return outlet of your canister filter of choice. That being said, an appropriate choice for a messy 75-gallon tank would be the Fluval FX4 canister filter. Efficient07 filters are big on power, yet small on energy consumption. The 107 and 207 models, for example, draw as little as 10 watts of electrical energy, which is equivalent to a single household LED lightbulb!

However, if you have the budget for it – you should absolutely go for the Cascade 1500, as it is way worth it in the long run. Since silence is what we’re after here, the article is about canister filters only, with them being the quietest type of filter out there. Low-cost alternative: Aquarium filter like the FX6 is not something all of us can afford, though it’s expected when you go for large aquariums and expensive fish in them. If your budget is tight, there’s an option for you:I bought a used 30 gallon aquarium with a pennpax filter. It sounds like my dishwasher is running all the time and water running too… I used to work in a preschool many years and really dislike noise now. If you risk it with a smaller and weaker aquarium filter the residual ammonia in the tank may end up killing your monster fish. It comes with a lot of improved and advanced features such a more powerful motor which enhances the water flow rate.
