It has some battle scars from being dragged almost everywhere by a Pokemon-obsessed kid, and up/down on the directional pad have input delays. Most importantly, it was the first video game system I could call my own. Before that point, any gaming I did was on systems at my aunt's or at another babysitter, or the PC games available at school. This wasn't the system that started my love for Nintendo, but it certainly helped cement it! This blinding yellow console was the perfect Pokémon Yellow accompaniment... well, unless you splashed out on the Pokémon Special Pikachu Edition bundle. If you wanted to advertise your love for the electric mouse without having little Pokémon pictures all over your console, though, this was your best bet. Colourful, but classy. Yes, it supported more than 32,000 color combinations (!), worlds away from its older brother, the Game Boy. But we’re talking about what matters much more, and that’s all those dope colors the hardware itself came in. It’s not practical, nor is the process intuitive, but there’s something about seeing a Game Boy Camera image in a color that makes it worth it.

For dozens of select Game Boy games, the Game Boy Color has an enhanced palette built-in featuring up to 16 colors—four colors for each of the Game Boy's four layers. [21] If the system does not have a palette stored for a game, it defaults to the "Dark green" palette. However, at power-up, one of 12 built-in color palettes is selectable by pressing a directional button and optionally A or B while the Game Boy logo is present on the screen. A successor to the original beast that was the Game Boy, the Game Boy Color unsurprisingly featured a colour screen, giving Nintendo's handheld games a whole new lease of life. While we sadly don't have exact figures for each of the two consoles separately, the Game Boy and Game Boy Color sold a whopping 118.69 million units between them, with 501.11 million games being sold, too. I would only have to wait three more years for my wish to be granted, with a fresh new Game Boy Advance in my greedy little hands. The bulky purple handheld brought me into a whole new dimension of color, graphics, and world-building that was previously impossible. I got to play reimagined classics like Super Mario Advance 2, team up with friends in The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, and fight eco-terrorists in Pokémon Ruby. They were more than just games, but teaching and social tools that helped me to develop into the weirdo I am today. Illustrated color-samples of the palettes for the different key combinations. Any color crossed out will be present in palette RAM, but rendered as transparent. Showing my bias here. This was my Game Boy Color, and it was the first video game system I ever owned. Love you forever, my little baby. Yellow maybe seems ostentatious to some, but this is the most subtle, charming, beautiful yellow on the color spectrum. Also, it reminds me of Pikachu, which is good.Nintendo do a fine line in purple (or purple-adjacent) consoles, from the gorgeous Indigo GameCube to the GBA or the looks-indigo-to-me Switch Lite. Not much to say about this rich purple GBC, other than we like it and we think it's good. Grape, even. The deep purple Game Boy Color is actually totally fine, but it’s bested by the much cooler transparent purple hardware. (That one’s coming up.) Maybe you asked your grandpa for a Game Boy Color for Chanukah, and you told him you wanted the “purple” one. You probably meant the cooler purple one, the one that everyone else had. But Grape threw a wrench into things, so Pop-Pop bought you this guy instead. Again: Fine! But not what you wanted. The Game Boy Camera is half gadget, half video game, and ahead of its time, sporting a rotatable lens for taking selfies. However, it’s the software that makes the Game Boy Camera stand out even today. Please leave it to the makers of the Pokémon games, Game Freak, to come up with likely the strangest camera ever produced.

This can be misleading as yellow and cyan have the same underlying mechanism, while only yellow is everywhere spectral (Hecht 133) Pokémon - Special Pikachu edition yellow & blue w/ logo, artwork & colored buttons (bundled w/ Pokémon Yellow) Photography has sure come a long way since 1998, but the Game Boy Camera remains a unique piece of tech that’s still worth revisiting twenty-four years later.
